Anapaya CORE - Building the SCION Internet backbone

The Anapaya CORE is a high-performance SCION router that forms the backbone of the SCION Internet. Deployed by Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and other network providers, it acts as a core router in the SCION network, enabling robust, secure, and efficient connectivity between different SCION-enabled networks (Autonomous Systems).

The Anapaya CORE is designed for network providers who want to offer SCION services, build resilient and modern network infrastructure, and provide superior connectivity to their customers.

Key features of Anapaya CORE

• Core SCION routing: As a SCION core router, it manages essential functions like path discovery, validation, and forwarding of SCION packets. It forms the foundation of the SCION control and data plane.

• High-Performance packet forwarding: Optimized for high-throughput, low-latency packet forwarding, ensuring efficient data transfer across the SCION Internet.

• Inter-Provider connectivity: Enables ISPs to establish peering relationships with other SCION-enabled providers, creating a resilient and scalable inter-domain routing fabric. It supports an unlimited number of SCION links to neighbor networks.

• High availability and redundancy: Supports various network redundancy features, including the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) and Clustering. This ensures that the network remains operational even in the event of a link or node failure.

• Flexible deployment modes: Can be deployed in different modes, such as static or dynamic (using BGP), to integrate seamlessly with the provider's existing network architecture and redundancy requirements.

Primary use cases

The Anapaya CORE is the foundation for service providers to build and offer next-generation networking services based on SCION.

• Building the SCION Internet: The primary use case for Anapaya CORE is for ISPs and network providers to build out the SCION Internet. By deploying CORE routers, they establish the foundational infrastructure for the SCION Internet.

• Providing SCION-based services: Once the SCION Internet is in place, providers can offer a range of SCION-based services to their enterprise customers, such as enhanced connectivity, DDoS protection, and path-aware networking.

• Enabling data sovereignty: By creating a network with controllable data paths, providers can offer services that guarantee data sovereignty, ensuring that traffic remains within specific geographic or political boundaries.

• Creating secure and resilient networks: The Anapaya CORE enables the creation of a network fabric that is more resilient to outages and more secure against attacks like BGP hijacking and DDoS attacks compared to the IP Internet.

Licensing

The licensing framework is designed to provide a flexible, scalable architecture that grows with your network needs. We utilize a hybrid model that combines a predictable fixed subscription with usage-based consumption, ensuring you only pay for the capacity and infrastructure you utilize.

Subscription model

The model is built on two components to ensure transparency and operational clarity:

• Fixed Subscription: This is the foundation of the license, covering the base entry fee for the platform. It is available in 1-year or 3-year terms to allow for predictable network operational planning.

• Consumption Counters: This usage-based component covers network throughput, router instances, and SCION links. It allows organizations to pay specifically for usage that extends beyond the base inclusions of their selected tier.

Each Anapaya CORE instance requires a valid license to operate. For licensing and billing purposes a CORE regularly requires a call-home to Anapaya's licensing and accounting backends.

Subscription tiers

To accommodate different stages of network maturity, the model is broken down into three strategic tiers. Each tier includes a specific baseline allowance for throughput (Gbps) and router instances.
